What You Should Know Before Buying Paint

Paint Terminologies & Their Meanings

What is VOC?

VOC stands for “Volatile Organic Compound.” VOCs are found in many building materials and are partially responsible for the new paint smell. Unfortunately, these unstable chemicals let off gasses that are very harmful to people and environment, which is why the government now regulates them.

What is Acrylic Paint?

Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint made of pigment suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion. Acrylic paints are water-soluble, but become water-resistant when dry.

What is Oil Paint?

Oil paint is a type of slow-drying paint that consists of particles of pigment suspended in a drying oil, commonly linseed oil. The viscosity of the paint may be modified by the addition of a solvent such as turpentine or white spirit, and varnish may be added to increase the glossiness of the dried oil paintfilm.

What is a Primer?

A substance used as a preparatory coat on previously unpainted wood, metal, or canvas, especially to prevent the absorption of subsequent layers of paint or the development of rust. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the material being painted.

What is Paint?

A colored substance which is spread over a surface and dries to leave a thin decorative or protective coating.

What is Paint Thinner?

Paint thinner is a solvent used to thin oil-based paints or clean up after their use.
